Nathaniel Brown is a BM in Piano Performance and minoring in Entrepreneurship at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is currently studying piano with Dr. Paul Barnes and previously studied under Mr. Kris Walters of Music Academy of Houston.
Originally from Houston, Texas, and a graduate of Clear Creek High School in League City, he is enjoying his time in Nebraska. A member of the University Honors Program, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, and accompanist for the Big Red Singers Show Choir at UNL, he finds many ways to stay busy around campus. He has been playing piano for 15 years since he was 4 years old and is passionate about all things music. He currently works at the TADA Theater in Lincoln Nebraska as the accompanist for their production of Company. He previously has played second keyboard for their production of Godspell and at theaters in Galveston, Texas performing second keyboard in shows like First Date and Something Rotten. He also works at a church in Lincoln and is the camp counselor for the Lied Center Piano Academy where he used to attend as a camper. He has taught private lessons for young beginners on piano and plays for children’s choirs during Christmas masses at his home parish. He loves playing piano and has also played oboe for almost 10 years.
Other instruments include steel drums, which he started in middle school and played with the San Jacinto Steel Band, percussion in his high school marching band on instruments such as synthesizer, xylophone, and marimba, clarinet with his marching band, and English horn, to compliment the oboe. He volunteers at the Newman Center on the UNL campus accompanying for masses whenever he can and tutors for music theory and aural skills classes to help music students. He has experience accompanying vocal and wind students and has played in almost every UNL ensemble including the Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Big Band, Undergraduate Jazz Combos, Chamber Ensembles, Big Red Singers, Varsity Men’s Chorus, and Steel Panguins. Some of his notable performances include the Lied Center’s EmeraLied Gala in 2022, playing Danny Elfman’s Violin Concerto, “Eleven Eleven” on celesta with the Symphony Orchestra working with violinist Sandy Cameron and conductor John Mauceri, debuting a piece by living composer Bryce Hayes entitled, “Icarus” from Mythos and Memoirs, and performing in student convocation recitals every semester for the UNL music student body.
Leadership roles he has taken are Front Ensemble Captain and Clarinet Section Leader in his high school marching band. His awards include the Weber Award for outstanding male senior student at Clear Creek High School with a $500 scholarship, the Louis Armstrong Award for two years in a row for high school jazz students, placing alternate in the NMTA Young Artist Competition, and numerous superior ratings in competitions throughout high school. He plans to continue his long list of accomplishments during his college experience and continuing on to graduate school in pursuit of his master’s degree.
